William R. Toler is a self-proclaimed “jack of all trades, master of jack,” with credits in various forms of independent media. He is the former features editor and co-publisher of the Independent Register and is managing editor of IndieRegister.com.
He recently returned to print as a reporter for the Richmond County Daily Journal after six years in television news and contributes to other alternative media outlets. In 2015, he received an honorable mention for the Walter Spearman Award for outstanding writing from the Associated Press in North Carolina.
Prior to entering television news, Toler was senior copywriter for Boomer Advertising in New Bern and a reporter/designer for The Beaufort Observer in Washington, N.C. He was the first production manager and later managing editor of the Campus Communicator at Craven Community College, where he received two associate’s degrees. While at CCC, Toler was an active member of Phi Beta Lambda and served one year as state historian.
Toler is a part-time activist and enjoys playing guitar, albeit poorly.
Corey Friedman is an award-winning journalist and First Amendment firebrand currently working as editor of the Richmond County Daily Journal in Rockingham, N.C. He is the former editor and co-publisher of the Independent Register.
His work has been recognized with 20 awards from the North Carolina Press Association, including the 2013 and 2014 Henry Lee Weathers Freedom of Information Award for coverage of open-government issues. He serves on the press association’s member services committee and the board of directors.
After co-founding the Independent Register with Toler and Voliva, Friedman worked as a reporter and editor for Freedom Communications newspapers in Havelock, Gastonia and Shelby, N.C. He previously managed digital content and reported on public safety as online editor of The Wilson Times.
His hobbies include driving poorly and making ill-advised nutritional decisions.
Eric Voliva is a writer and storyteller who hopes to add his byline to a book jacket. The former sports editor and co-publisher of the Independent Register, Voliva is currently writing a novel for eventual publication.
He has worked as a sportswriter and news reporter for the Pamlico News, a family-owned weekly newspaper based in Oriental. He previously served as production manager of the Campus Communicator student newspaper at Craven Community College and was a member of the Phi Beta Lambda business organization. He and Friedman were awarded second place in desktop publishing at a state PBL conference in 2005. Voliva has worked in a variety of industries, serving as dock foreman for a seafood company and a freight forwarder for a shipping firm whose clients include ESPN and the National Football League. He is a sports enthusiast and avid Carolina Panthers fan.
